Helmut Newton e gli anni della Costa Azzura presentati a Monaco

The fashion photographer Helmut Newton regularly photographed the French Riviera and drew much inspiration from its landscapes in the composition of his pictures.

"I love the sun, there's none left in Paris," Helmut Newton was quoted as saying when he moved to Monaco in 1981. Over the years, the fashion photographer has forged a special bond with the south and the Mediterranean coast. Many of his photographs pay homage to the French Riviera, which is why the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco has chosen to dedicate an exhibition to this geography in Helmut Newton's career. The Newton Riviera exhibition will be held on the “rocher” until 13 November 2022.

From the 1960s until his tragic death in 2004, Helmut Newton photographed the Riviera, particularly in the last twenty years of his life, after he moved to Monaco. The period can be considered the most prolific and free in his photographic career.

He photographed the people passing through and the inhabitants of the rocher, but also the stars of the Monte Carlo Ballet, and the princely family. In Monaco, the photographer used to fashion photos and portraits tried his hand at landscapes and more original and strange shots, inspired by crime scenes.

The 280 photographs presented in the Newton Riviera exhibition recall Helmut Newton's close ties with swimming pools and the Mediterranean, the Cannes Film Festival, but also the film, music and art stars whose portraits he often took. And they tell the story of the photographer's mischievous look at this world of roles and appearances, in which he enjoyed taking part.
